****Time Out: "No Picnic is unquestionably a feast." (Critic's Choice)
"Greg Freeman’s dark and funny play could be described as a mixture between Tim Burton, Terry Pratchett and The Simpsons, with its sudden twists and offbeat comic timings. The dialogue is fast and quick-witted but also looks at profound questions about morals, aging, self esteem and the human need to control others." Whatsonstage.com
This is an allegorical comedy that explores the crisis of conscience of teddy bears invited to a picnic in the woods, where they witness a disturbing incident that seriously alters their existence. In an unreal world that meets reality, three cuddly bears who cannot lie and a weird doll that can, embark on a precarious journey to save their skins. Having watched No Picnic at the lovely Tabard Theatre last month, we begged writer Greg Freeman and director Ken McClymont to bring it to The Rosemary Branch as we thought it was a piece of theatre - intriguing, gripping and memorable with seamless writing, great acting, inventive direction and a simple yet clever set. Oh and did we mention it was funny ? (both ha ha and peculiar).
Greg Freeman and Ken McClymont have had 2 previous Time Out Critic's Choices with Doig! The musical with no singing, no dancing and very little music, and Beak Steet, both at The Tabard. Ken directed The White Whore and The Bit Player at The Rosemary Branch Theatre in January 2011 which also starred Helen Russell-Clark in one of her first theatre roles following a year in Hollyoaks.
